Aabenraa/Denmark, NygadeHuset

February 21, 2001

It was in the last minute that I planned to go to Aabenraa for Kevin Montgomery's last show of his Scandinavian tour. It means a lot to me that someone else of his fans attended one of his gigs in Scandinavia.

It's only a trip of about 3 hours from Hamburg to Aabenraa, a small provincial town in the south of Denmark with 15,000 inhabitants, the longest pedestrian street of all towns in Denmark, and pretty small old houses in the streets. You could find the poster announcing the show all over the city.

The NygadeHuset where Kevin staged his solo concert is a house for cultural events and activities. It's a cosy venue for about 50 people who can sit in a relaxed atmosphere around small tables with candle lights on them.
Kevin came up to me with his small cassette recorder, popped his headphones on my head, and I listened to the wonderful songs of his new four song EP which he recorded together with Robert and Paul: "Bella Bina", "Tennessee Girl" (with Trisha Yearwood on back vocals ), "Melrose" and "Cajun Song"( featuring Robert on lead vocals). Really knocked me out my shoes!

Absolutely new for me was "Bella Bina", a fantastic song , love it very much. Can't wait to buy the EP.

Kevin entered the stage, and Nigel, a good friend of Jenny who organized the show, opened the show with a warm welcome for Kevin in Aabenraa, and the audience welcomed him too with big applause.

The first song was "Another Long Story", and then he played 19 more songs for us, the encores included. You can find the set list below. The crowd was quiet and listened to what he played. They paid all their attention to his amazing voice and his famous songs. I think he's got a lot of fans over there.

Kevin was in very good mood and told us lots of things, with his well known kindness and personality, and the audience were laughing, applauding and shouting to him. Was a very relaxing atmosphere, the audience went with him through his show as if we all were old friends.
He played three unreleased songs: "She Don't Wake Me Up", "I Can't Drive You From My Mind" and "Unknown Legend". Very cool songs. Aside from that, he played "Bella Bina", "Melrose", "Tennessee Girl" too, telling that he recorded them lately with Robert Reynolds and Paul Deakin of The Mavericks, and that Trisha Yearwood sang on "Tennessee Girl".

For "Fear Nothing", Kevin's last song before the encores, he asked Nigel to accompany him with his guitar, and he did that with great talent.

It was really cool to see and hear them playing together. Nigel asked Kevin to play "Everybody's Girl" for him, and the audience clapped their hands during the whole song. They really had a lot of fun.

After the show, Kevin was hanging around to talk with everybody, a wonderful addition to his show. They all loved him. So it was a great finish of his Scandinavian tour, and I could be very happy to be there, don't like to miss it. Kevin, thanks for this great night, and Jenny for organizing it.
